How to make more nutritious fish feed

Fish need the correct balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals to grow and stay healthy. This type of feed is considered complete feed.

Protein is the most important part of building a fish school. During their growth stage, omnivorous fish such as tilapia and carp require 25-35% protein in their diet, while carnivorous fish require up to 45% protein to grow at an optimal level. Generally speaking, young fish (fry and fingerlings) need a protein-rich diet more than they are in their growth stages. Proteins are the basis of structures and enzymes in all living organisms. Protein is composed of amino acids, some of which are synthesized by the body of fish, while others must be obtained from food. These are called essential amino acids. Among the ten essential amino acids, methionine and lysine are usually limiting factors, and these need to be supplemented in some vegetable basic feeds.

Lipids are fats, and they are high-energy molecules needed by fish in their diet. Fish oil is a common ingredient in fish feed. Fish oil is rich in two special types of fats, omega-3, and omega-6, which are good for human health. The amount of these healthy lipids in farmed fish depends on the feed used.

Carbohydrates are composed of starch and sugar. This ingredient in the feed is a cheap ingredient that can increase the energy value of the feed. Starch and sugar also help to combine feed into pellets. However, fish cannot digest and metabolize carbohydrates well, and most of this energy is lost.

Vitamins and minerals are necessary for fish health and growth. Vitamins are organic molecules that are important for development and immune system function, synthesized by plants or through manufacturing. Minerals are inorganic elements. These minerals are necessary for fish to synthesize their own body composition (bone), vitamins, and cell structure. Some minerals are also involved in osmotic adjustment.
